Özgür Ergül received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, in 2001, 2003, and 2009, respectively, all in electrical and electronics engineering.  He is currently a full Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey.  He is also a B.S. student since 2020 in the Department of Psychology at the same university.

Ergül served as a Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Bilkent University from 2001 to 2009.  He was affiliated with the Computational Electromagnetics Group at Bilkent University from 2000 to 2005 and with the Computational Electromagnetics Research Center (BiLCEM) from 2005 to 2009.  In 2009, he joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK, as a Lecturer.  He was also a Lecturer of the Centre for Numerical Algorithms and Intelligent Software (NAIS).  In 2012, he joined the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at METU, where he is currently a full professor.  He was the principal investigator of the CEMMETU research group from 2013 to 2021.  Since 2021, he is the principle investigator of the AEMMETU research group.  Ergül is also a co-founder of ACCELERATE - a company dedicated to electromagnetic simulations- since 2021.

Ergül has conducted research on diverse topics, mainly in the area computational electromagnetics. He has received many national and international awards, including 2007 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Graduate Fellowship, 2007 Leopold B. Felsen Award for Excellence in Electrodynamics, 2010 Serhat Özyar Young Scientist of the Year Award, 2011 URSI Young Scientists Award, 2013 Science Academy Young Scientists Award, 2013 ACES Early Career Award, 2013 Parlar Foundation Research Incentive Award, 2014 METU Young Scientist Award, 2014 TÜBİTAK Incentive Award, 2015 Turkish Academy (TUBA) Young Scientist Award, 2017 IEEE Turkey Section Research Incentive Award, and 2018 EurAAP Leopold B. Felsen Award for Excellence in Electrodynamics.  He was also a recipient of 2014 Parlar Foundation Instructor of the Year Award.

Ergül is the author of the undergraduate textbooks “Guide to Programming and Algorithms Using R” (Springer), “Introduction to Electrical Circuit Analysis” (Wiley), and “Introduction to Electromagnetic Waves with Maxwell’s Equations” (Wiley), as well as a co-author of the graduate textbook “The Multilevel Fast Multipole Algorithm (MLFMA) for Solving Large-Scale Computational Electromagnetics Problems” (Wiley-IEEE), and the editor of the textbook “New Trends in Computational Electromagnetics” (IET-Scitech).  He is the author or a coauthor of more than 450 journal and conference papers on electromagnetics.

Ergül was the chair of the award-winner IEEE AP/MTT/EMC/ED Turkey chapter in 2016-2021 and a member of ACES Board of Directors in 2018-2021.  He served as the Editor-in-Chief of Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (a multidisciplinary SCI-E journal) in 2017-2019, a column editor of IEEE Antennas and Propagation Magazine in 2012-2020, and a column editor of URSI Bulletin in 2015-2023.  He is currently an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group).
